Kentucky Space Futures Initiative Launches
to Strengthen Commonwealth’s Role in Global Space Economy

Initiative’s first event features evolutionary biologist Scott Solomon discussing his recently released book
Becoming Martian at the University of Kentucky on March 26, 2026

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Space Futures has launched as a statewide initiative designed to raise awareness and promote growth across Kentucky’s space-related sectors, including science, technology, business, education and law. The initiative is co-founded by Humanity In Deep Space™, the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC), and the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development/KY Innovation.

The initiative aims to facilitate collaboration among Kentucky’s research institutions, educational organizations and commercial space enterprises while building capacity in the interdisciplinary aspects of the state’s expanding space footprint. Organizers say the effort will also encourage critical thinking and bold problem-solving to address the complex challenges surrounding space exploration.

Kentucky Space Futures will launch its programming with a free public event on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Scholars Lounge, Lewis Honors College, University of Kentucky, Lexington. Evolutionary biologist Scott Solomon will lead an interactive discussion based on his recently released book, Becoming Martian (MIT Press), exploring how living beyond Earth could reshape human bodies, minds and society. The event will include a Q&A session and a book signing.

Human civilization has entered a new era as a spacefaring species, bringing new opportunities and challenges expected to shape global economic and social systems in the coming decades. The global space economy is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2035, according to industry estimates.

Although often overlooked in national discussions, Kentucky already contributes to the global space sector through education, research and development, advanced manufacturing, and participation in commercial space missions.

Kentucky Space Futures seeks to position the Commonwealth more deliberately within the expanding off-Earth economy. In addition to advancing science and technology, the initiative highlights the importance of space law, design, ethics and the humanities in shaping long-term space development. ###

The initiative will promote resources and competitive advantages that make Kentucky an attractive location for current and future space-related companies and organizations.

Additional information about Kentucky Space Futures, including partnership opportunities and upcoming activities, will be announced in the coming months.
