Alain Berinstain
Alain Berinstain, Ph.D., is a space exploration and innovation expert with a focus on scientific research, strategic business development, and international partnerships. He is currently the Director of the Florida Space Institute at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he leads a cross-disciplinary research institute managing a portfolio in planetary science, microgravity sciences, radar and radio astronomy, lunar science, and emerging areas. His responsibilities include overseeing the administration of the Florida Space Grant Consortium, the Exolith laboratory, and the Stephen W. Hawking Center for Microgravity Research and Education.
Alain has also taken on the additional responsibility of Directorship of the newly formed Florida Space Research Consortium, a consortium of 8 Florida universities. The Consortium will meet research objectives that no single university can achieve.
Dr. Berinstain draws on over 30 years of experience in advancing space-based manufacturing, exploration technologies, and national and international policy frameworks. His mission is to enhance space exploration, science, and technology by bridging public and private sectors, promoting evidence-based strategies that improve efficiency, innovation, and global cooperation in extreme environments.
Dr. Berinstain has held leadership roles including Chief Strategy Officer at CSS Inc. and Space Tango, where he secured commercial agreements, generated revenue for in-space manufacturing, and cultivated partnerships for automated biomanufacturing. Earlier, he served as Director of Policy in Canada's Office of the Minister of Transport, advising on national strategies, and held multiple director-level positions at the Canadian Space Agency, managing budgets for planetary exploration, space astronomy, and missions like the James Webb Space Telescope, OSIRIS-REx, and Mars Phoenix Lander. He also contributed as adjunct faculty at the University of Guelph, supervising research on greenhouse technologies for extraterrestrial environments.
Dr. Berinstain received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Ottawa, with a thesis on the effects of UV light on biological systems. He holds a Master of Space Studies from the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, and a B.Sc. in Honors Chemistry from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Other activities include serving on the R&D Subcommittee of the ISS National Laboratory User Advisory Committee and advising startups. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in space science, technology, photochemistry, and photobiology.
